Winter weather has thrown a wrench into Alaskan travel plans, with over 150 flights canceled! Freezing rain and temperatures dancing around the freezing point have grounded numerous flights, causing significant disruptions for travelers.
Specifically, Grant Aviation has been hit hard. Dan Knesek, the Vice President of Commercial Operations, reported that over 150 flights originating from Bethel have been canceled since Saturday.
This isn't just a Bethel problem; the harsh conditions have also affected flights between Anchorage and Kenai. Knesek noted the winter weather's 'significant impact' on Grant's operations.
"We haven't had a single flight depart from our Bethel base since Saturday due to the freezing rain and strong winds," Knesek stated.
Adding to the travel woes, fog and freezing rain caused delays in Kenai and Anchorage, leading to an additional 31 cancellations and 25 delayed flights.
But here's where it gets controversial: While operations in Anchorage and Kenai have, as of Tuesday, returned to normal, the forecast paints a challenging picture.
Significant icing, snow, rain, strong winds, and even warm weather are predicted to impact large areas of Alaska, particularly the southwestern region.
