Picture this: a mysterious visitor from the depths of space could be slamming on the brakes in our solar system, sparking wild debates among scientists. In case it slipped past you, an intriguing celestial body hailing from beyond our solar system has been making waves in astronomy circles. Known as 3I-ATLAS – the 'three' standing for its status as the third such object discovered – this enigmatic entity ignited a subdued excitement among experts when it was first detected in early July. Many in the field are convinced it's an interstellar comet, a frozen wanderer traveling between stars. However, a few outspoken researchers, led by the ever-divisive Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb (whose bold theories we've covered before at Futurism), have floated the idea that it might be something far more extraordinary: a probe or craft dispatched by an extraterrestrial civilization (as detailed in our earlier piece on mysterious visitors releasing probes). While most of Loeb's colleagues have shot down this notion outright (as NASA has done in their disputes), the fiery scientist remains undeterred, fueling ongoing speculation.
At the moment, 3I-ATLAS is tucked away behind the Sun, rendering it invisible from Earth for the next several weeks. This solar blind spot, Loeb had previously mused (in his insights shared on Futurism), could be the perfect opportunity for the object to pull off something unexpected. And now, fresh images captured by the Nordic Optical Telescope on the Canary Islands have given him fresh ammunition to back his claims.
These visuals reveal that the 'tail' of debris the object emitted as it approached the Sun (a watery spray we discussed in a recent article) has shifted direction, now pointing straight toward our star instead of trailing behind. Astronomers refer to this as an 'anti-tail,' a rare but documented occurrence in various comets stretching back decades (as explored in IFLScience reports). To understand this for beginners, imagine watching a car's exhaust from the side: as the vehicle moves past you, the smoke trail might appear to flip or reverse due to your viewpoint and the physics of motion, even though the exhaust itself hasn't changed.
But here's where it gets controversial – and this is the part most people miss in the mainstream chatter. Loeb isn't buying the straightforward comet explanation. In his latest blog post, he proposes a radical alternative: that the anti-tail signifies 'braking thrust' from an alien spacecraft, essentially the object decelerating to extend its stay in our star system.
'As Loeb wrote, 'If the object is an alien spacecraft slowing down, and the anti-tail is braking thrust, then this change from anti-tail to tail would be entirely expected near perihelion.' This builds on ideas from his collaborator Adam Hibberd at the Institute for Interstellar Studies. 'In that case,' Loeb adds, 'the transition would constitute a technosignature in the form of an unexpected phenomenon indicative of controlled maneuvering, possibly with the intention of achieving a bound heliocentric orbit between Mars's and Jupiter's orbits.'
For those new to the term, perihelion is the point in an orbit closest to the Sun, where gravitational forces are strongest. And a bound orbit means the object would loop around our star indefinitely, rather than just passing through.
Of course, the true nature of 3I-ATLAS remains up in the air. We'll have to wait until December 19 for it to reemerge from behind the Sun, at which point observations will reveal if its path has been altered by some deliberate deceleration – or if it's merely continuing its journey as the lifeless icy snowball most experts believe it to be.
