This desire has only grown as rivals like James Madison and Sam Houston have successfully made the leap. However, NDSU's geographical location has historically presented a unique challenge, making such a transition a more complex puzzle to solve. Currently, the Bison compete in the Missouri Valley Football Conference for football and primarily in the Summit League for other sports.
But here's where it gets interesting: NDSU's football team isn't exactly a stranger to upsetting FBS opponents. Since transitioning to FCS in 2004, they boast an impressive 9-5 record against FBS competition, including notable victories against Power Five schools like Iowa, Iowa State, and even Minnesota on two occasions. This record speaks volumes about their competitive spirit and readiness for a higher level of play.
And this is the part most people miss: the Mountain West itself is undergoing a massive transformation. This summer, several key members – Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State – are heading to the newly reconstituted Pac-12. To fill the void, the Mountain West is actively recruiting. They're bringing in UTEP as a full member and Northern Illinois as a football-only affiliate, alongside non-football additions like Grand Canyon and UC Davis. Adding to the drama, the Mountain West and the Pac-12 are locked in a legal battle over a staggering $150 million in exit and poaching fees. It's a high-stakes game of conference realignment!
The remaining core of the Mountain West includes Air Force, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State, UNLV, and Wyoming. If NDSU joins, it would bring the conference's football membership to a solid 10 teams. Under the guidance of head coach Tim Polasek for the last two seasons, the Bison secured the 2024 FCS championship and had a remarkable 12-0 start to the 2025 season before an unexpected playoff exit against Illinois State.
While a definitive agreement hasn't been reached, sources indicate that conversations are deep and ongoing, likely extending into the following week. Such a monumental move would undoubtedly involve a substantial entry fee for NDSU to join the Mountain West, in addition to a $5 million NCAA fee to facilitate the transition from FCS to FBS. If this move materializes, the FBS landscape would expand to 137 member institutions.
Adding to the excitement, the Mountain West recently finalized a lucrative new TV deal on Tuesday. This agreement, set to run from the fall of 2026 through the summer of 2032, will feature broadcasts on Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and The CW. This financial stability could certainly be a draw for potential new members.
