The Phillies' Groundhog Day: Same Lineup, Same Frustrations?
As pitchers and catchers gather in Clearwater, marking the start of spring training, a familiar feeling washes over Phillies fans. It's a feeling of anticipation, yes, but also of déjà vu. A new season is upon us, yet the core of the Phillies' lineup remains unchanged, leaving many to wonder if history will repeat itself.
The Phillies' journey through the 2023 season was a rollercoaster, ending in disappointment in the NLDS. And this winter, they narrowly missed out on a key free agent, Bo Bichette, to their rivals, the Mets. So, as we enter 2026, the Phillies are largely running it back with the same crew, hoping for a different outcome.
But here's where it gets controversial... Phillies president Dave Dombrowski claims the team is "content" with their roster, despite the lack of significant additions. Manager Rob Thomson, however, insists they're not just "running it back."
Thomson highlights new relievers and the addition of Adolis García in right field. He also mentions prospects like Justin Crawford and Otto Kemp, and the potential leap of Andrew Painter as a young starter. But the real question remains: is it enough to shake things up?
"We're turning over 20-25% of our roster," Thomson says. But the core of the lineup, the heart of the matter, remains largely the same. Seven of the nine bats that have been staples since 2023 are projected to continue through 2026. Nick Castellanos is gone, but Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber are back, along with Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, J.T. Realmuto, and Brandon Marsh.
And this is the part most people miss: this group, for the most part, is getting older. Turner, Schwarber, Harper, and Realmuto are all in their 30s, and the once-youngsters Bohm, Marsh, and Stott are now in their late 20s, inching closer to free agency.
García, a key addition, was signed to a one-year deal, a gamble on his ability to recapture his 2023 World Series form with the Rangers. But it's been over four years since the Phillies' miracle run in 2022, and they haven't come close to replicating that success.
The Phillies kept the group together, first without Rhys Hoskins, and now without Castellanos, but they've consistently hit the same wall in the postseason. And now, they're doing it again, with minor tweaks, as baseball moves forward and the Phillies age.
The excitement and hope that spring training brings are palpable, but for the Phillies, it's a different story. It's a story of familiarity, of a lineup stuck in time. It's tough to be optimistic when the same faces keep reappearing, year after year.
And so, as we look ahead to 2026, the Phillies' lineup from 2023 to 2026 remains largely unchanged, a reminder that sometimes, progress can feel like a distant dream. Will this be the year the Phillies break free from this cycle? Only time will tell.
