Coastal Carolina University just made a game-changing move! They've officially named Ryan Beard as their new head football coach, a decision announced by Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and University Recreation, Chance Miller. Beard steps into the role as the fifth head coach in the program's history, bringing with him a track record of impressive success from Missouri State University. During his time at Missouri State, he orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, highlighted by a winning record at the FBS level in 2025. But what makes this appointment so exciting?
"We've landed one of the nation's best young coaches," Miller stated, emphasizing Beard's energy and passion. Miller believes Beard is the perfect fit to lead the team, citing his ability to elevate teams and develop student-athletes. Beard's journey includes stints at Western Kentucky, Louisville, and Central Michigan, before his successful FBS transition with Missouri State. The university is excited to welcome Coach Beard, his wife Katie, and their children.
Beard's coaching career began at Missouri State on December 19, 2022, at just 33 years old, making him the youngest head coach in program history and the 22nd to lead the Bears. Before his promotion, he served as the team's defensive coordinator under Bobby Petrino. Beard's defensive strategies were instrumental in Missouri State's resurgence, leading to consecutive FCS playoff appearances in 2020 and 2021 – the school's first postseason berths in 30 years. His defenses also produced four All-Americans, 18 all-conference standouts, and three NFL players.
In 2025, Beard led Missouri State to a 7-5 record in their inaugural FBS season, earning a spot in the Xbox Bowl. The Bears also finished second in Conference USA in both total defense and rushing defense. Beard's impact was immediate, fueled by a disciplined defensive approach and strong player development. This success was a continuation of the momentum from the 2024 season, where Missouri State finished 8-4 and ranked No. 23 nationally in the FCS. The Bears excelled in passing offense, total offense, and scoring, with the defense leading the Missouri Valley Football Conference in sacks per game (2.6).
But here's where it gets controversial... Could this rapid success be sustained? In 2023, Beard's first season as head coach, he led Missouri State to a late-year surge, including a win over No. 18 Northern Iowa. Beard was later selected for the AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute.
Before becoming head coach, Beard served as Missouri State's defensive coordinator from 2020-22, where his units engineered one of the biggest turnarounds in FCS football. The Bears set program records for sacks in consecutive years (2020-21 and 2021) and ranked among the national leaders in various defensive categories.
Beard's coaching expertise extends beyond Missouri State. At Louisville (2017-18), he worked with one of the ACC's top defensive back units, developing future NFL players. His experience also includes stops at Central Michigan (2019) and Western Kentucky (2016).
Beard has also proven to be a skilled recruiter, particularly in the Midwest and Southeast. He has a strong background in identifying talent and building relationships.
"Coach Beard is a leader of character, energy, and vision," said Coastal Carolina University President Dr. James J. Winebrake.
As Beard prepares to lead Chanticleer football, he expressed his excitement to join the Coastal community.
"It's an incredible honor to be named the head football coach at Coastal Carolina University," Beard said.
A native of Bowling Green, Ky., Beard was a standout defensive back at Western Kentucky from 2007-11. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Kentucky and he and his wife, Katie, have four children.
