A £9 million masterpiece by Claude Lorrain, a renowned 17th-century French artist, is at the center of a captivating debate. The UK government has stepped in to prevent the export of this extraordinary painting, titled "Landscape with Rural Dance," which has been a cherished part of the Bedford family's collection at Woburn Abbey for over two centuries.
But here's where it gets controversial: the painting is now up for sale, with a recommended price tag of £9 million. The Bedford Estates, responsible for the upkeep of Woburn Abbey, have confirmed this strategic decision, citing the need to fund extensive refurbishment and conservation projects that began in 2019.
"This is a significant painting by Claude Lorrain, and its sale is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the long-term preservation and enhancement of the abbey's collection," a spokesperson explained.
The Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) has emphasized the painting's importance, describing it as "one of Claude Lorrain's masterpieces." The scene, they say, captures the essence of an idealized rural life, far removed from the hustle and bustle of urban existence, with its shepherds and rural figures.
And this is the part most people miss: the painting's potential departure from the UK. Unless a domestic buyer steps forward, this masterpiece could leave the country. The government has temporarily deferred the decision on the export license, giving UK galleries and institutions until April 15th to acquire it.
Christopher Baker, an art historian and member of the reviewing committee on art exports, believes the painting should be secured for a public collection. "Its transcendent beauty and fascinating history, which warrants further research, make it a valuable addition to any public collection," he said.
So, what do you think? Should this masterpiece remain in the UK, or is it time for it to find a new home? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
